I strongly suspect that the author is a professional writer by career. This story is so well constructed, with chess at the centre of it, and with brilliant characterisation throughout. This story, and for that matter others posted by this author, could easily have been penned by Archer- see a Quiver of Arrows, a collection of short stories (excellent). Highly impressive style, pace, presentation. A highly recommended author.
