This is an excellent piece of historical fiction which is rich in both context and characters throughout. Grammar, syntax, and pace are flawless throughout. The settings are factually accurate and the story firmly grounded. Dialogue is realistic and concise. The basic themes are developed well, and give the work a sense of coherence and direction. Without exaggeration, this is worthy of Pasternak. Not light reading but not intended to be, and this is its strength. Highly recommended to those who like their historical fiction well researched and delivered with pace and colour.
